Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Junior Web Developer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in WordPress development and confident day-to-day experience within the WordPress administration environment. This role requires a blend of back-end knowledge for customisations and strong front-end skills to build responsive, performant, and accessible webpages.

Key Responsibilities and Required Skills
• Strong WordPress fundamentals and confident working day-to-day in the WordPress admin.
• PHP skills within a WordPress context (theme templates, basic customisations, understanding how WordPress renders pages).
• Familiarity with Custom Post Types and custom content structures (experience with custom fields is a plus).
• Experience with JavaScript for front-end behaviour, troubleshooting, and small enhancements.

Front-End Development and Design
• Strong HTML and CSS skills, with expertise in creating responsive layouts, consistent spacing and structure, and cross-browser awareness.
• Confident building and maintaining pages in Elementor (proficiency with sections/containers, templates, reusable blocks, responsive controls).
• Ability to build webpages from wireframes and reference examples, following an established site structure and layout patterns.
• Comfortable learning and applying an internal “in house style” so new pages match proven design patterns and user flow.
• Able to identify and reduce unnecessary inline styles, keeping styling consistent and maintainable using global styles and proper CSS where appropriate.

Technical Best Practices
• SEO basics in WordPress (headings structure, meta titles/descriptions, internal linking, image SEO, common SEO plugins such as Yoast or similar).
• Performance best practices (optimising images, correct formats/sizing, meaningful alt text, general page speed awareness).
• Accessibility awareness (semantic HTML, correct heading hierarchy, form labels, keyboard navigation awareness).
• UK GDPR awareness (cookie consent basics, handling form/user data appropriately, compliance-minded approach).

"Nice to Have" Experience
• Experience with webhooks and third-party API integrations (REST/JSON, connecting WordPress with external tools).

• A talented Junior Web Developer with proven experience in the areas detailed above.
• Able to work to tight deadlines and prioritise tasks and manage urgent tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience in managing a complex and demanding workload with minimum supervision using own initiative.
• Experience and ability to assimilate large quantities of written and verbal communication quickly.
• Excellent attention to detail with focus on delivery.
• Flexible, innovative and proactive.
• Strong organisational skills, including time management.
• Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and remain objective and impartial at all times as a strong team player.

Remote working

Since the pandemic, our business moved from purely office-based to remote/hybrid working, as we appreciate the flexibility this affords our team outside of our office environment.

Therefore, for the foreseeable future, this role will be home-based with regular team meetings in Peterborough, currently approximately once a month (subject to change). Whilst the home location of the successful candidate can be anywhere in the UK, they must be willing to travel to Peterborough (at their own expense) for meetings and be able to attend/arrive for standard office hours.

Please note that remote/hybrid working is offered on the basis of having a private, secure location to work from home in, with a strong internet connection.

We still retain a serviced office space for our team to hot desk/hold meetings at in Peterborough.
